Early Pregnancy Signs – Am I Pregnant? Symptoms, Tests & First Trimester Guide

If you’ve ever asked yourself “Could I be pregnant?” you’re not alone. Many women begin Googling this exact question at the first hint of unusual symptoms. While the only way to confirm pregnancy is through a test, there are early signs your body may give you. As one of Australia's Leading Hypnobirthing practitioners, I have educated thousands of women and supported them through education I want as many women to know and understand their bodies through pregnancy right from the start so let's start right from the beginning.

Common Early Pregnancy Symptoms

  • Missed period – one of the most obvious early signs.

  • Tender or swollen breasts – hormonal changes can make breasts feel sensitive.

  • Fatigue – increased progesterone can leave you feeling unusually tired.

  • Nausea or morning sickness – often starts around week 6, but can appear earlier.

  • Frequent urination – hormonal shifts increase blood flow to your kidneys.

  • Mood changes – fluctuating hormones may affect your emotions.

  • Food cravings or aversions – sudden likes or dislikes for certain foods.

  • Light spotting or implantation bleeding – sometimes noticed around the time your period would normally arrive.

Every woman experiences early pregnancy differently. Some feel many of these signs, others only notice subtle changes.

Taking a Pregnancy Test

If you think you might be pregnant, the best first step is a home pregnancy test. These tests detect the hormone hCG in urine, which is usually present from about 10–14 days after conception.

  • Best time to test: the day after your missed period for the most accurate results.

  • If negative but still unsure: retest in a few days, as hCG levels double every 48–72 hours.

  • Blood test confirmation: your GP can order a blood test for early, reliable detection.

The First Trimester: What to Expect

The first trimester covers weeks 1–12 of pregnancy, and it’s a time of rapid change for you and your baby.

  • Book your first doctor’s appointment (usually between 6–10 weeks) to confirm pregnancy and arrange early blood tests and ultrasounds.

  • Prenatal vitamins – folic acid and iodine are essential for your baby’s growth.

  • Managing symptoms – rest, hydration, and gentle nutrition help ease nausea and fatigue.

  • Emotional well-being – mood swings are common. Seeking support, mindfulness, or guided relaxation (like hypnobirthing techniques) can help.

When to See a Doctor Urgently

Contact your healthcare provider if you notice:

  • Heavy bleeding or severe cramping

  • Dizziness, fainting, or sharp abdominal pain

  • Severe nausea and vomiting leading to dehydration

These may be signs of complications that need medical attention.
